Biologic therapeutics include virus, therapeutic serums, toxins,
allergenic products, antitoxin, blood components or derivatives, vaccines,
blood, and proteins (except any chemically synthesized polypeptide). They also
include analogous products, arsphenamine, or derivatives of arsphenamine (or
any other trivalent organic arsenic compound) for the prevention, treatment, or
cure of a disease. The differences between the biologics and small molecules
include the molecular weight, structure, procedure of synthesis, and
immunogenicity. Biologics have a higher molecular weight and a complex
molecular structure. They are usually derived from living entities, which is
another important feature that differentiates it from small molecules.
Biologics are also vulnerable to extreme temperatures (thermolabile) and light.
